Vocal Exercise Routine No. 2

Objective: Focus on adding more chest tone into your singing.

What this means:

Chest tone is what gives your voice its power, strength and vibrancy. It’s the tone of voice most of us use when we speak to one another.

If you were to think of chest tone like a particular colour, it might be deep and rich, like a dark red or deep sea blue. Without sufficient chest tone in your singing, it becomes hard to sound powerful and resonant. In fact, you may feel like it's hard to project when you sing and that you run out of air very quickly.

The exercises in “Vocal Exercise Routine 2” can help you to add more chest tone ‘colouring’ into your voice.

When you practice these exercises, pay particular attention to your volume, how much air you’re using and where your energy is coming from. You never want to practice loudly so keep your volume at a comfortable level — like you’re having a casual conversation with a friend at a cafe. You also need a lot less air when you practice your exercises, so try to challenge yourself to use as little air as possible when you sing. Also, you never want to feel like you’re forcing these sounds from your throat. Your energy should always be directed down towards your lower abdominal area.

The goal for you is to learn what chest tone feels and sounds like in your voice and to practice blending this tonal quality into your singing in an even and balanced way.
